RRROBOT started with a urgent wish. The wish for self-made clothing.
In 2007 i founded RRROBOT during my graphic design studies together with my buddy sebastian. The idea was printing designs on shirts and hoodies that we love to wear. There was no masterplan of founding a brand. At this time, we didn’t even know where the way would lead us to. So we equipped ourself with basic screenprint gear and got it going.
The feedback for the first shirts we printed was simply great. Friends and their friends, they all liked the stuff so much, that we decided to come up with a first collection in 2008. We bought our own screenprint carousel, created more designs, organized a photoshooting and learned more and more about screenprinting.
In 2009 i decided to take the next big step and dedicated my diploma thesis to RRROBOT.
I started with research of that phenomenon called streetwear. Its birth and roots, its meaning back in the days and nowadays. For my analysis i took the chance of travelling to Los Angeles, the so called birthplace and mecca of streetwear.
With the insights i got by researching I developed a deep understanding for the essence of streetwear. It’s all about living a good life, enjoying the time with your friends and having fun. Streetwear is the expression of it.
For my diploma thesis i developed a corporate design for the brand with everything needed, logoworks, mascot, marketing & business plan. I designed a new collection, defined a look and carved out the image of RRROBOT as a brand. With the photoshooting of the 2009 collection i designed all the tools we needed like flyers, stickers and a lookbook.
The TRRRashbot was the mascot i designed for the brand. Running RRROBOT from 2007 until 2011 the TRRRashbot was the face of the brand, emerging in various forms. Such as stickers and posters, badges, shirts, bags, hoodies and so on.
Right after my graduation we decided to move with our screenprint lab out of my flat into a store in cologne. Since day one we printed all the clothing by ourselves, this was part of our philosophy. Without us printing all the stuff by ourselves, RRROBOT wouldn’t have existed.
The RRROBOT Store was a great experience. We had some really good parties there, with a screenprint lab in the back and a showroom in the front. Also there was a lot of work we didn’t expect, creating new designs turned out to be the smallest part of it more and more. In 2010 we came up with a new collection and started giving screenprint workshops in the StoRRRe.
During the time we’ve been to countless design markets and fairs, like the bright tradefair, where we came up with some cool gueRRRilla marketing. I met so many nice people and the feedback of them kept me going. In the high times of RRROBOT we were selling our clothing in around a dozen stores throughout germany. Plus the internet shop we were running and our cologne-based store.
All of this brought us to a point of restless work. Unfortunately the thing why we started it all, designing the clothes we love to wear, was only a fraction of it. The fact of printing all of that stuff on our own was a very time consuming process. To be honest, in this situation, the only possibility was outsourcing the printing itself. But that was the last thing we wanted.
It was one of the hardest decisions in my life, seriously, but it was inevitable. We decided to send RRROBOT to early RRRetirement. Man, that was tough.
In 2011 we had our last great party in the stoRRRe. After a few month i realized that it was the best thing we could do. From then on i had time to really focus on illustrating and designing again.
In the five years of running my own streetwear brand RRROBOT i gained a lot of experience, met new friends and learned some very useful lessons for my life. I definetly don’t want to miss this time, that’s for sure.
